Pee and Poo, two taboo breaking cuddly toys by Swedish designer Emma Megitt.
Pee and Poo originated in 2004 as Emmas Master of Design project at HDK (School of Design and Crafts, Gothenburg University). They went on line with their own site shortly afterwards. Within a few months more than 50000 people had visited the site. And although Emma had not seriously thought about producing her two out-of-the-loo-lovelies, she received so many enquiries as to price and delivery time that she went into production.
So what is the deal with Pee and Poo? According to Emmas dissertation The soft cuddly toys Pee and Poo elegantly integrate form and function in a playful and disarming manner. Their design idiom not only appeals to children, but also flirts with the adults of the collectable toys market. Pee and Poo address the taboo surrounded subject of bodily functions in an amusing, yet aesthetic manner. Pee and Poo can be used in parenting contexts such as traditional potty training.
In order to lessen the risk of their being seen as merely a designers desire to be provocative, their status is further secured by their stylish packaging. The idea of creating cuddly toys on the subject of pee and poo is not only truly unique, both historically and now, it also neutral, and therefore widely applicable and acceptable, with regard to age, gender and nationality.
Emma says that to put it briefly, People just like them, they seem to have a universal appeal.
Pee and Poo come in their own display box. The 15 cm high creatures of the ivory throne are made in cotton plush, and stuffed with polyester fiber. They are CE marked, ASTM approved and suitable for children of all ages. Megitt has also created a line of childrens wear, for instance Tshirts, underwear and socks, as well as cuddly keychains and a letter set.
